Andy McAfee Appointed Club Chairman

Andy has recently been elected as Chairman to White River Wheelers.  Here are a few things Andy has to say about himself;

I’ve always had an interest in cycling but got really stuck into it when I bought my first racer in 2009 and began going out for spins with friends, solo and Togher Wheelers.

I had never been involved in any type of sport so didn’t understand the whole social aspect that a sport brings with it.  I joined WRW club from the beginning, and got hooked on the camaraderie and craic that came with every weekday and weekend spins.

Cycling can be very challenging for every level of cyclist.  One of my first big challenges was the Giant’s Causeway sportive.  I gave up half way through the cycle and felt very disappointed that I was not going to be able to cross the finish line.  It was then I realised that the saying is true, fail to prepare, prepare to fail.  However, I didn’t give in to defeat and went back to complete it successfully since.

I started racing in the Cuchulainn road racing last year and thoroughly enjoyed the buzz and level of adrenaline that came with it.  It’s great to see so many other adrenaline junkies from WRW racing this year and I would truly advise anyone to give it a go, all abilities are catered for.

Being elected a chairman brings its own responsibilities and duties.  I would like to entice new members into our club and I hope that with my cycling experience, encourage members to view cycling as an enjoyable and social outlet.  At the same time, progress our cyclists through the levels to improve their cycling speeds and ability.

With all that said, safety is and always has been at the top of the club’s priority list and we strive to ensure that our club adheres to the safety laws.  As most of you know I took a few tumbles this year, first one I would put down to road condition and speed, and second one down to a few seconds of laps of concentration.  Everyone has their bad days but full concentration is essential at all times.

What makes a club is its members, so don’t hesitate to share any views, opinions, ideas, whether good or bad, with us.  We will welcome any feedback our members have to offer.
